For around 15 years, I've been publishing books on topics such as spirituality, personal development, psychology, beekeeping, project management, coaching, neurodiversity, and strengths.
I've also created online courses on Udemy and YouTube videos covering these subjects.
Recently, I considered turning my books into audiobooks. I experimented with several affordable microphones before choosing a high-end RODE, but my voice didn't suit the format well.
Amazon invited me to join their Beta/MVP program for virtual voices to automatically generate audiobooks. Now, my books across various genres are available as audiobooks with virtual narration.
The exciting part is selecting the voice characteristics—US or UK accents, tone, pace, and gender—to match the book. Other languages are also an option for the future.
For example, the beekeeping and psychology books feature an English documentary-style voice, while the coaching books have a younger American male tone and pace.
If you're interested, check out Amazon for niche books you wouldn't expect to find as audiobooks, or follow my link to hear virtual voice samples. Share your thoughts on the concept or quality of 'virtual voices' by commenting below with the hashtag #virtualvoice.
A question arises about the authenticity and honesty of using AI for narration. I believe it's acceptable as long as it's disclosed on the sales page, similar to hiring a human narrator—what do you think?
The quality is quite impressive. However, some words, especially standard headings, sound more 'non-human' because the AI can't adjust as contextually as it does within a sentence.
